This is why, to mark our 40th anniversary, ELPRO is supporting the “Resistant Bees” project, which promotes natural resistance to the Varroa mite. Together, we want to ensure healthy bee colonies and make a lasting contribution to biodiversity.

About the Resistant Bees Project

The Resistant Bees project is dedicated to keeping bee colonies healthy and naturally resistant to the Varroa mite – one of the biggest threats to bees worldwide. Its goal is to strengthen bees’ natural defenses so they can thrive without chemical treatments.

How the project works:

  • Breeding resistant bees: Only colonies that show natural defense mechanisms against Varroa are selectively bred.
  • Protecting biodiversity: Healthy bees support pollination and help maintain diverse ecosystems.
  • Science meets practice: Beekeepers work closely with researchers to test and develop innovative methods.

By promoting natural resistance, the project provides a sustainable solution to the challenges of modern beekeeping. ELPRO supports this initiative because healthy bees are vital not only for the environment but also for agriculture and our collective future.

Who is behind the project?

The Resistant Bees project is driven by a dedicated team from Eastern Switzerland, combining experienced beekeepers, researchers, and environmental experts. The initiative is supported by research institutions, cantonal authorities, and members of the Werdenberg Beekeepers’ Association, working together to develop and promote naturally Varroa-resistant bee colonies. Their shared goal is to create sustainable solutions that protect bees, support biodiversity, and ensure the long-term health of ecosystems.
